Gotham Park is the nonprofit grassroots organization reopening, revitalizing and reactivating the forgotten spaces under the Manhattan side of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. They approached Steph about leading her Yoga for Skaters classes in the park every Saturday as part of their community programming in the Spring of 2024. Steph saw an opportunity to engage a wider audience by rebranding the class "Brooklyn Banks Yoga". The Brooklyn Banks are a legendary skate spot, so the reference will be caught by skaters. These classes are for everybody so it was important that the name reflect that while paying homage to its roots in skateboarding.
Steph designed the logo to visually reference skateboarding, graffiti culture and New York city. She looked to the Brooklyn Banks iconic history to inspire the look and feel of the logo. The goal was to connect this new community outreach program with its origins. The balance of multiple influences gives it a wider visual appeal. It feels like a modern twist on a nostalgic vibe.
Steph creates the flyers and reels to reflect the diverse community that Brooklyn Banks Yoga brings out. She gives it a sense of place by utilizing the iconic bricks the spot is known for as a recurring design element throughout the digital marketing. She collaborates closely with Gotham Park to engage more of the community by translating the flyers into Spanish and Mandarin. She often works with photographer Aldous Heaven to capture the event series.
Thrasher magazine covered a special community give back Gotham Park organized with Vans and the Skatepark Project. They supplied free gear and lessons with the Vans skate team for the local kids. Then Steph hosted a yoga class that catered to the needs of pro skaters. Having this moment published in Thrasher really helped solidify the value yoga brings to skateboarders.
